Where to go on holiday In December
If you’ve ever imagined yourself basking in the summer sun and enjoying a beach barbecue on Christmas Day then you could do no better than a festive escape to Sydney. Maldives
The Maldives are idyllic during December and temperatures remain at a wonderfully warm 25-30°C, so holidays at this time are excellent for some winter sun. Though mid-month showers are likely, the climate is largely hot and dry and eight hours of sun ensures days by the private infinity pool of your overwater villa are well spent. The temperature drops a few degrees in the evening, making sunset cocktails and al fresco dinners overlooking the ocean nice and mild.

Australia
Summer has reached Australia and the days are getting warmer. Temperatures are well into the 20s in all major cities, and higher in the tropical Northern Territory (the latter also comes with a bit of rainfall). Beaches get busier at this time of year and the sea is a pleasant 21°C. Christmas brings carol services and festivities to Sydney – for an evening you’ll never forget, head to the Harbour for the world-famous display of dazzling New Year's Eve fireworks, before continuing the party in one of the city’s famous hotels.

Thailand
With the rainy season behind, cooler and drier climates make it easier to explore the country’s otherworldly temples, jungle-clad national parks and beautiful islands. There’s lots of sunshine, little rain and the temperatures are comfortable without being too hot. It’s also one of the best times to visit for marine enthusiasts as waters are clearer and some of Thailand’s best dive and snorkelling sites around the Surin and Similan Islands are open from October to May.

New Zealand
New Zealand is warming up to summer and Auckland sees temperatures reach the mid-20s. December is the best time to visit for beach trips as it doesn’t yet have the crowds that summer brings (or the prices), but stick to the east coast on both the North and South Islands for soft sands and perfect swimming conditions. Hiking is also popular this month as temperatures are cooler at higher altitudes and the scenery is spectacular.

Mauritius
December marks the beginning of summer and the wet season in Mauritius. With the increase of humidity levels and rainfall the mornings normally start off sunny, allowing you to enjoy the beautiful beaches and warm sea temperatures – thunderstorms tend to build up later on though, so an afternoon trip to the spa can be a good idea. The draw of a tropical Christmas and New Year is always a strong one so this can turn into one of the busiest periods on the island.
