Mauritius, a postcard-worthy paradise, stands out as one of our top recommendations for a romantic getaway. Having ventured to this island jewel ourselves, we can vouch for its magic. Our travel expert, Claire, has just returned from a stay at one of the island’s renowned retreats, The Oberoi Beach Resort Mauritius. We asked her to share her favourite moments.
First impressions
When we arrived at The Oberoi Beach Resort Mauritius, I was blown away by the vast Balinese-style thatched buildings towering around a tumbling waterfall. We were welcomed with an icy mojito in the lounge overlooking the resort's botanical gardens. I felt relaxed instantly, reassured by the staff's friendly nature and attentiveness. They already knew where we’d travelled from, what we were celebrating, and even our food preferences. A guided tour through the gardens led us to our room, where a lovely surprise was waiting for us – a bottle of wine, sweet treats and our suitcases already neatly arranged.
The room that stole our hearts
Our home away from home was a huge, luxurious villa with a private heated pool. Every night we enjoyed a swim beneath the stars, serenaded by the call of native tropical birds. The villa itself was spectacular, featuring bamboo furniture, a plush four-poster bed and a sunken marble tub. Starting the morning with a refreshing indoor/outdoor shower was a delight. Sliding open the glass door revealed a small private nook filled with exotic plants; it felt like you were showering in the jungle.
Culinary delights
While the resort's dining options were exceptional, The Gunpowder Room stole the show. A grand candle-lit table set the scene for a tantalising tasting menu featuring various Creole curries – about ten in total, accompanied by traditional sides. The historic ambience of the old gunpowder room added a layer of romance, and our meal was beautifully complemented by a local lychee wine, recommended by the sommelier.
Unmatched Service
The staff tending to the pool and beach areas were on the ball. They'd rush to lay out our sun towels and provide fresh ones as we left the pool. It’s a level of service I’ve never experienced before and allowed us to fully relax knowing we didn’t need to lift a finger for anything.
Island adventures
One day we headed out to see the island on a private car and driver tour. Our driver was a fountain of knowledge and had a fantastic sense of humour. He took us to an off-the-beaten-track restaurant for lunch, and it was great to dine amongst the locals and see somewhere a bit different. We sampled spiced rums in La Rhumerie Chamarel, witnessed the beauty of Chamarel Waterfall and explored Black River Gorges National Park. I’d seen pictures of these places before and seeing them in the flesh was even more impressive than I ever imagined, particularly Black River Gorges.
Below the blue
Twice a day, the hotel organises speedboat trips to a nearby reef for snorkelling, and we eagerly joined in every afternoon. The knowledgeable team not only pointed out dolphins in the distance but also introduced us to a vibrant array of marine life, from colourful coral inhabitants to curious underwater creatures.
Best moment
Thanks to the resort's perfect spot on the west coast, we were treated to some spellbinding sunsets. On one memorable afternoon, we wrapped up a wine-tasting session only to step outside and be greeted by the most jaw-dropping sunset over the beach. We quickly hopped into a hammock to enjoy the show. The sea was calm and the purple sky was dotted with delicate pink clouds as the sun slowly disappeared below the horizon.
Top tips for couples
We stayed in a Luxury Villa with Private Pool, which is a worthy upgrade if you’re celebrating a special occasion. For the ultimate night of romance, book a candlelit beach dinner followed by the Bubbles and Bliss experience in your villa. Your personal butler will prepare a bath filled with rose petals, complete with a bottle of Champagne and strawberries.
Final thoughts
The Oberoi Beach Resort Mauritius is a great choice for couples or honeymooners because the features and design of the hotel mean it naturally loans itself to moments of romance. Even a simple stroll through the subtropical gardens from your room to breakfast feels enchanting. Live music in the evenings and experiences like cooking classes and star gazing create moments you’ll never forget. And, of course, the second-to-none service you’ll receive from the Oberoi team will make you feel pampered from start to finish.
