La Gomera Holidays
Discover the wild beauty of laurel forests, misty mountains and never-ending ocean views on holidays to La Gomera.
Have you heard of the whistled language of Silbo? It’s a shrill UNESCO-protected calling that locals use to converse on the misty covered mountaintops of this almost untouched island. Traversing those towering rock walls, you’ll hear the call and realise how far removed you are from the better-known Canaries. La Gomera holidays take you off the beaten track to a tiny jungle-like jewel far closer to nature and topography than to decadent bars and thumping clubs.
That’s not to say there isn’t carafe after carafe of wine, refreshing pools and well-designed hotels. It’s just played out in a different way – fresh fish and salted potatoes surrounded by banana groves and colossal ferns, 18-hole championship golf set high above a charming fishing village and sun loungers dipped in water overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Bird song wakes you up, hiking takes you to a verdant prehistoric core and family-run restaurants invite you in for home-made food. There are unexpected black-sand beaches in Valle Gran Rey, that Los Roques viewpoint almost touching the sky and Garajonay National Park’s ancient silver rainforest home to wildlife species that have all but disappeared elsewhere.
Holidays to La Gomera put you under-the-radar in the heart of an extraordinary Biosphere Reserve on a near circular isle where roller coaster thrills are found along precipitous winding roads, watersports play out on azure seas and sundowners are sipped at local fisherman’s bars. Where is La Gomera Off the coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean, La Gomera is a tiny Canary Island belonging to the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Read moreNatural La Gomera Nature lovers are lured by the island’s unique flora, spectacular scenery and the incredible UNESCO-listed Garajonay National Park. With stunning landscapes ranging from dramatic cliffs and pebble beaches to magnificent views of neighbouring Tenerife and its mighty Mount Teide, it’s easy to see the appeal of this tiny island. Follow hiking and walking trails through laurel forest and across lush valleys that lead to the dormant volcanic centre. Head north to sample the fruits of the fertile barrancos or venture south through the deserted villages by the Valle Gran Rey. Mountain biking, bird watching and whale-watching are also popular activities here.

Visit the island's capital, San Sebastián, to see the simple house where Christopher Columbus famously once lodged and watch elegant yachts anchor at the marina. Buy fresh fruit and vegetables as well as home-made jams at the local market, head to one of the town's beaches – Playa de San Sebastian and Playa de la Cueva, or stop for photos at Mirador de las Carboneras, a lookout with views of the town and Hermigua Valley.
Read moreGetting around The local bus company, Guagua Gomera, provides a comprehensive network across the island between the valleys and the capital town of San Sebastián with buses reliable although only running on a timetable of every couple of hours. Car hire is also a good option, and most of the time, at your chosen destination, you’ll be hiking, walking or swimming.
Read moreFood & drink As can be expected of a tiny island in the Atlantic Ocean, fresh fish and seafood are specialities with family-run harbour and seafront restaurants offering the best of these delights. Expect varying menus depending on the day’s catch as well as meats including chicken and lamb alongside plenty of wholesome vegetarian cuisine and local wine. You’ll find restaurants with spellbinding clifftop views, home-cooked hearty food in family-run trattorias and not a fast-food chain or brand name in sight.

However, in late 2023 (date to be confirmed), British citizens must apply for a European Travel Information and Authorisation System waiver, commonly known as an ETIA, covering a visit for up to 90 days. Passports must have at least three months of validity after your intended departure date.
