The Bush Camp Chiang Mai

If stunning river and misty mountain views and elephant observations are your thing, an overnight stay at the rustic Bush Camp Chiang Mai is a must-do. This beautiful spot, which is run by our long-time partners Elephant Hills, introduces you to Thailand’s most famous resident animals (in a hands-off style) and the people that care for them: the mahouts.

There are just 10 African safari-style tents here which were built by skilled local crafters. They feature an en-suite bathroom (each with a hot shower) and have exceptional views out over the forest towards the mountains. Between included experiences, you can relax on the terrace of your tent, take a dip in the infinity pool and enjoy meals in the open-air dining pavilion.

Recommended itinerary

Day 1

Chiang Mai to Bush Camp

Travel south from the city, arriving at camp around mid-morning. Lunch will be served, setting you up for the afternoon and evening experiences. You’ll get to interact with the free-roaming herd, by helping feed them, and discover more about the mahouts who care for these majestic creatures. Observe traditional practices and learn about how the mahout’s family pound rice, weave clothes and make paper from dung. Watch the elephants from the camp’s café and enjoy a sundowner with jaw-dropping views at a local look-out point. End the day with a buffet dinner.

Day 2

Bush Camp to Chiang Mai

The day begins with a fresh buffet breakfast followed by a visit to the forest where the elephants roam. You’ll be served a traditional coffee and snacks known as kafee, boran and kanom krok, the breakfast of choice for the mahouts. Watch the elephants have their morning wash and find out how they are cared for, including animal husbandry techniques and veterinary attention, before another mouth-watering meal and your return transfer to Chiang Mai.
