Located on the edge of a thriving game reserve you can spot rhino, zebra and giraffe on a thrilling game walk or go horse riding through spectacular scenery. Tour Spioenkop’s Anglo-Boer War battlefield and hike in the idyllic Drakensberg Mountains.

They reduce their environmental footprint wherever possible and encourage guests to take home things they’ve observed – whether it’s re-filling wine bottles with water or preserving tea bags to use as firelighters. Living in a farming area, gives them access to fantastic fresh produce. Using a series of reflective aluminium sheets put together like a satellite dish, they cook meals on an oversized solar cooker - it boils a five-litre pot of water in nine minutes.

Families are welcome here. Two of the family cottages have their own pools so kids can make as much noise as they like. They offer little extras including a toy box, small gowns, and mini hot water bottles. They've got a couple of family specific trails – one of which leads to a ‘magic faraway tree’ that’s actually a very large, climbable acacia with a big wooden swing – and another that leads to a river and encourages them to get properly dirty and muddy.
