The Gwen, A Luxury Collection Hotel, Chicago
In a landmark building just off the Magnificent Mile, close to the city’s best shopping and top attractions, the glamorous Gwen is an excellent choice for a city-break splurge, or a celebration with girlfriends.
The Gwen had big boots to fill, as it took shape inside the shell of the 1929 McGraw Hill tower, whose façade was designed by pioneering female sculptor Gwen Lux. Would Lux be smiling if she could see the Gwen today? We think so, because inside you will find a marriage of 21st century comfort infused with all the sexy glamour of the building’s art deco origins. Gwen embellished her 1929 masterpiece with sculptural panels depicting signs of the Zodiac – a theme recreated on one wall of the stylish, well-appointed bedrooms. Windows frame the city skyline, or look out to Lake Michigan, and bathrooms are well-lit, with marble-topped vanity units and roomy walk-in showers. Some suites have corner aspect views and terraces – but no-one misses out at The Gwen. There are skyline vistas from sunrise to sunset at Upstairs at the Gwen, where fire pits take ‘patio season’ well into autumn. Guests can order breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner here, while a ‘tipsy’ afternoon tea and Mediterranean food and is served at Kostali. Did we mention in-room spa treatments and Chicago’s first urban glamping experience? All that’s missing is Carrie Bradshaw and Co.
