Ravello Holidays

Expect operatic beauty on holidays to Ravello, a supremely enchanting clifftop classic that stands the test of time.

High up on the sun-drenched slopes above Amalfi your first look down to the Tyrrhenian Sea will have you wondering if it might be easier to touch the sky than dive into those inviting waters. But worry not, taking a dip in the pool of your hotel will soon have you cooling off in breathtaking surrounds, and a walk in clean fresh air down 1,000 plus steps through lemon and olive groves will put you right on the beach.

We love holidays to Ravello for their luxury yacht-set vibes and those great heights matched with a carpet of incredible Italianate gardens, ancient architecture and pastel-coloured stuccos down sleepy lanes. Expect sinfully delicious restaurants between the sky and sea, al fresco cafes in Vescovado Square and mosaic layers of centuries old stonework in the town’s precious 11th-Century cathedral.

There’s nothing like walking through Villa Cimbrone’s irresistible gardens. Stop a while on the Terrace of Infinity and take in those jaw dropping Gulf of Sorrento which inspired Gore Vidal to call Ravello “the most beautiful place that I had ever seen.” We also love the world-class open-air sunset music concerts at legendary Villa Rufolo and the simplicity of sipping a lemon granita at the edge of a cliff as a glow of lights signal twilight on the horizon. Ravello holidays don’t try and compete with overly modern hotels or high-tech gizmos – instead they remain timeless in their allure, attracting those in the know with a rather special kind of beauty.

Exploring Ravello
At Ravello’s picture-postcard main square you’ll want to stop for a seafood lunch and glass of wine before exploring both the 11th-Century cathedral and resplendent Villa Cimbrone. Take half a day to roam the legendary gardens of this palatial villa, stopping at the infamous Terrace of Infinity. Overlooking Piazza Vescovado, Villa Rufolo’s cascading gardens and grounds seem to have been plucked from a fairytale. Richard Wagner was inspired to write his final opera here, and to this day, the town is known as “la città della musica“ – the city of music.

Getting around
As a mostly pedestrian-only town, the best way to get around is by foot. There are steep slopes and lots of steps, which is worth bearing in mind if you’re not so physically able. There are a number of scenic walking trails that lead you to other towns, including seaside Minori and Amalfi. A shuttle bus service is also available down to the sea and back again.
