Nine Skies has a knack of leaving you spellbound. This is go-slow territory where one day rolls dreamily into another as you swim with glorious views and discover the tonic to urban life.

You’ll spend devilish amounts of time flitting from poolside to fireside but also be enticed by the distractions; a lesson in Sri Lankan cooking, the reward of a king coconut at the top of Ella Rock and effortless meandering through the Hill Country’s tea plantations thanks to the hotel’s walking app. There are other diversions too, pancake-rich breakfasts at Bungalow Viewpoint, pitch-perfect afternoon teas and an alfresco restaurant with an earth-kind low-mile menu.

There are just five bedrooms in the tea bungalow, all stylish retreats that open out onto private verandahs. You’ll find four-poster beds, refillable glass water bottles, biodegradable bathroom toiletries in your room, and televisions shunned in favour of views. The Nine Skies bedroom features twin four-poster beds which is perfect for friends that are sharing or to book for teenagers bedroom to interconnect with another double room for parents. Space-seekers flock to Ella Rock Suite, impressive for couples and useful for families wanting to convert the sitting room into an extra bedroom.

Lavish breakfasts at Bungalow Viewpoint are a highlight as is the Planter’s Lunch (a selection of Sri Lankan curries), afternoon tea and à la carte dinner on the veranda overlooking the garden. This is home of the railways. You can walk to the iconic Nine Arch Bridge, hop on one of the local Iron Devils steam trains or watch the action unfold on the Demodara Railway Loop famed for its unique engineering that solved the issue of such a steep climb by creating a magnificent rising loop in the track. There are waterfalls to chase, tea plantations to wander through, cloud forest to disappear into, an adrenalin pumping twin zip line and hikes including the long-distance Pekoe Trail and Ella Rock. At the hotel, recreate the curries you’ve tasted with a Sri Lankan cooking lesson and turn your eyes to the sky searching for some of the vibrantly coloured endemic birds that call the gardens home.
