Lakaz Chamarel Exclusive Lodge

A green hideaway in the hills

This exclusive mountain retreat, surrounded by tropical gardens within The Black River Gorges National Park, is one of our best-kept secrets.

Managed like a guesthouse but with the full service of a 5-star hotel, Lakaz Chamarel Exclusive Lodge is a resort to behold. With luxurious bespoke lodges dotted across the subtly landscaped vegetation, this mountain hideaway instantly induces a sense of serenity and offers both vast ocean and mountain views across its abundant estate. From the fruit trees planted by the owner’s daughters to the beautiful pieces of furniture fashioned from a tekoma tree collected after a cyclone, the resort is embroidered with charming stories and an unrivalled level of care exudes from its core.

Why we love Lakaz Chamarel Exclusive Lodge

  • This boutique resort has a stunning setting within the Black River Gorges National Park, home to rare kestrels and green parrots

  • Wherever you are in the sensitively planted 30-acre grounds, there are panoramic views of the mountains and the sea

  • It’s within cycling distance of Chamarel Seven Coloured Earth, one of the island’s most extraordinary geological wonders

  • There’s an authentic island feel to everything from the warm service to the delicious food in the restaurant

With a menu of the day as well as à la carte options, the fact that there is just one restaurant isn’t an issue. There are also several small eateries a short walk away in Chamarel village that guests are encouraged to try.

The Restaurant
The delightful open-air restaurant serves a locally sourced American-style buffet breakfast. Lunch is à la carte and features fresh salads, grilled fish and a mixture of both Mediterranean and Mauritian offerings, while in the evening there’s a seasonal set menu as well as à la carte.

The Bar
Guests are invited to help themselves at the bar throughout the day, though staff are always on hand to fix those pre-dinner cocktails.

If you can’t bear to tear yourself away from your private pool, you can have breakfast, lunch and dinner in your lodge for a supplement.

The Sauna and Wellness Hut adds another level of indulgence to the resort with its thatched roof and hand-crafted structure blending effortlessly into its surroundings. From hot stone to deep tissue, choose from an array of massage and reflexology treatments* while being lulled by the mesmerising bird song outside and the fragrant blend of essential oils as they linger in the welcome breeze. Use of the sauna is complimentary for all guests and is tentatively prepared before your private session.

Yoga sessions take place in the Silent Space studio in the morning; private sessions* can also be arranged. There’s also an outdoor Meditation Labyrinth.

There is a small ‘fitness kiosk’, but the focus at Lakaz is on getting moving in the great outdoors, whether that’s on a nature hike or a bicycle ride.

There’s a free three-times-a-day shuttle to and from the beach, and the hotel can arrange water sports on request*.

The ever-changing menu in the restaurant is based around seasonal local products prepared in traditional ways. Air conditioning uses a lot of electricity, so instead there are ceiling fans and large windows to let in the mountain breezes. It represents an alternative vision of eco-tourism on Mauritius away from the better-known coastal areas. The garden, a 25-year labour of love, is filled with plants that are native to Mauritius and naturally adapted to the conditions.

Minimum stay: 3 nights 22 Dec-05 Jan; 2 nights at other times.
