20 Degrés Sud Hotel – Relais & Châteaux

Intimate, stylish and serene

Cocooned in a tranquil beachside coconut grove, this refined and characterful boutique resort is made for romantic breaks.

The word most often used to describe the only Relais & Châteaux property in Mauritius is ‘charming’, and it’s not hard to see why. Some of 20 Degrés Sud’s irresistible appeal is down to its enviable setting in a shady coconut grove right at the water’s edge, which helps to conjure up a secret-garden vibe. Then there are the coolly elegant colonial-style buildings with their palm-thatched roofs and white slatted shutters, and the breezy, pale interiors furnished with cleverly chosen antiques that make each space unique. And there are quirkier touches – an aquarium in the library – which all help to create the impression of being as far as it’s possible to be from the bustle of modern life.

Why we love 20 Degrés Sud Hotel – Relais & Châteaux

  • This small Relais & Châteaux property on a private beach is an appealing romantic hideaway

  • There’s an inviting home-from-home feeling in the guest rooms, which have four-poster beds and antique furnishings

  • With Mauritian flavours to the fore, every meal here is an event – especially if you're eating aboard the hotel’s vintage motorboat

  • When you want a change of pace, the hotel has its own pirogue to whisk you to Grand Baie in style

The refined Mauritian-influenced cuisine and the settings in which it is served, whether that’s under a sail on the sand or on a vintage motorboat in the middle of the bay, is sure to conjure up a glow of contentment.

L’Explorateur
At the hotel’s main restaurant, each day begins with a buffet breakfast and dreamy sea views. The à la carte lunch and dinner menus have an international flavour with local touches; the signature Creole-style fish salad with chilli is a typical example.

La Voile
Right by the sea, under a canvas awning, La Voile is a chilled-out place to drink, eat and hang out during the day without having to stray too far from the pool or beach.

M/S Lady Lisbeth
Every night, eight guests can take to the water on M/S Lady Lisbeth. Built in 1929, it has been lovingly restored and is a fittingly exclusive setting in which to savour a set menu of refined sea-to-table dishes and fine South African wines.

Lounge Bar
The hotel’s open-sided lounge bar has cosy wicker chairs for quiet sipping and a long bar for more sociable types, as well as a list of fine wines to try.

For a one-of-a-kind experience, a dinner cruise on the island’s oldest motorboat is not to be missed.

Occupying a thatched hut in the quietest part of the grounds, with a tranquil swimming pool in front of it, the intimate Secret Spa is a haven of calm. There is a beautiful hammam, plus a handful of treatment rooms where guests can experience a roster of indulgent treatments* and rituals designed to soothe the soul and nourish the body.

Yoga and stretching sessions with a coach* are available at the spa.

There is no gym, but there are bicycles available to rent.

The hotel’s boathouse offers snorkelling, kayaking, paddle boarding, Hobie cats and windsurfing.

The vegetables, fruit and fish used in the restaurants are all from the island, with herbs from the hotel’s own garden. There’s a no-single-use-plastics policy, and even the picnic boxes for excursions are made using natural materials. The hotel invests a percentage of its profits back into various community and sustainability projects. As much waste as possible is recycled and there are recycling bins around the grounds for guests to use.

Minimum stay: 4 nights 26 Dec-06 Jan.
