Dera Mandawa

Jaipur’s top heritage homestay

This small family-run heritage property is full of character and Indian charm.

Located near the Chandpole gate, one of the entrances to the ‘Pink City’ of Jaipur, Dera Mandawa is a charmingly fresh and unique hotel. Drawing heavily on its family heritage background – the owner is the great grandson of the original owner – the hotel has been developed as a home-stay property, which aims to provide guests with an authentic cultural experience during their stay. For those interested in cultural jaunts, the hotel offers cycle rickshaws or day taxis for keen sightseers, and also hosts gala evenings where guests can try their hand at turban tying or enjoy a family-run cookery course.

As a home-stay property, meals are enjoyed alongside the Singh family in the property's small dining lounge or courtyard. Breakfast is inclusive, while lunch and dinner are available on advance request from a set menu of home-cooked Indian and Rajasthani cuisine. The home-stay nature is an enriching experience, but for more variety it's just a short stroll into Jaipur where there is a lovely selection of local restaurants nearby.

The property has eleven guest suites, situated on two levels and all facing towards the central courtyard. Suites are large, comfortable and spacious, and are all wonderfully decorated with a traditional Indian influence and style.

Why we love Dera Mandawa

  • The original architecture with ornate arches still remains and there are courtyards, gardens and even the occasional cow

  • Guests can enjoy homestyle cooking during dinner with the family in the courtyard

  • Despite the age of the property, there are plenty of modern amenities including air-conditioning and Wi-Fi

  • Most of the staff are local and they are passionate about employing women who wouldn’t otherwise find work
