Grano de Oro

A grand period property with a gem of a roof terrace

Set on the quieter side of San José, this Victorian mansion is just a 15-minute drive to the city’s sights.

At this peaceful Golden Age bolthole you’ll find riffs of the Victorian era everywhere from the opulent restaurant loved by locals to the turn-of-the-century rooms and suites styled with antique furnishings and luxury linens. Pièce de résistance is the luxury of a city rooftop terrace with two hot tubs and a deck lined with loungers.

Why we love Grano de Oro

  • A winning combination of classic charm and intimacy, with just 40 rooms

  • In an upmarket neighbourhood whose peaceful vibes are a big draw

  • A former private residence, this Victorian mansion still carries an evocative and homely ambiance

  • After a day of sightseeing, take drinks on the rooftop terrace and soak in one of the hot tubs

The hotel is home to one of the city’s most-loved restaurants, with guests flocking to the decadent dining room and romantic courtyard for French cuisine at its finest.

Restaurante Grano de Oro
Helmed by French chef Francis Canal, Grano de Oro has an outstanding French/Mediterranean fine dining menu with a tropical twist. Open for breakfast (authentic Tico dishes), lunch and dinner, it’s a local favourite. Expect everything from Costa Rican tenderloin to responsibly sourced fish alongside coffee and chocolate desserts. The best seats in the house are in the open-air internal courtyard with a glass of wine from the award-winning cellar.
