Isla Mujeres Holidays

Once the mythological home to the Mayan Goddess Ixchel, this slither of paradise just off the Cancun coast is now a popular setting for do-very-little retreats.

Days on Isla Mujeres can easily be whiled away on a sun lounger with a page turner, moving only for delectable meals and dips in the glass-clear sea. The atmosphere is tranquil and the pace of life slow. However, you can fill your days with underwater adventures – the island is part of the extensive Mesoamerican Barrier Reef and there’s even an underwater sculpture park just off the coast – or out on the water on a kayak, catamaran or paddleboard. Rent a bike and explore Mujeres’ Mayan ruins at Punta Sur Park or just stay put and work your way through your resort’s extensive spa menu.

The island is a popular day trip from Cancun but a stay of a few nights (as an addition to a week or so on the Mayan Riviera) will give you the chance to linger a little longer on these paradise shores and truly relax.

Beaches
Playa Norte, sitting at the northern tip, is the island’s prettiest and most popular beach. A magazine-worthy gem of powder-white soft sands and calm silky waters, it’s lined with palm trees, beach clubs and restaurants. The sheltered conditions and close-to-shore coral reef also make it a great place for kayaking and snorkelling. Head along the west coast and you'll find a few more beautiful beaches set between private homes and hotels.
