Once the mythological home to the Mayan Goddess Ixchel, this slither of paradise just off the Cancun coast is now a popular setting for do-very-little retreats.
Days on Isla Mujeres can easily be whiled away on a sun lounger with a page turner, moving only for delectable meals and dips in the glass-clear sea. The atmosphere is tranquil and the pace of life slow. However, you can fill your days with underwater adventures – the island is part of the extensive Mesoamerican Barrier Reef and there’s even an underwater sculpture park just off the coast – or out on the water on a kayak, catamaran or paddleboard. Rent a bike and explore Mujeres’ Mayan ruins at Punta Sur Park or just stay put and work your way through your resort’s extensive spa menu.
The island is a popular day trip from Cancun but a stay of a few nights (as an addition to a week or so on the Mayan Riviera) will give you the chance to linger a little longer on these paradise shores and truly relax.

Whale Shark Encounter
This marine adventure begins at sunrise when you are picked up at your hotel and transferred to the boat that will whisk take you to a spot that's known for its marine wildlife sightings. The warm waters are home to Earth’s largest fish species, the whale shark, which can grow up to 14 metres in length. You’ll be on the lookout for these sedately swimming creatures as they feed on the abundant plankton and krill in the warm waters off the Yucatan coast and even have the chance to swim amid the giants if you so choose. After lunch on board, there'll be time for a swim as you are anchored close to the beautiful Isla Mujeres.
• Duration: full day
• Daily departures from Riviera Maya and Tulum
• Operates June to September
• Group experience
Good to know

Where is Isla Mujeres?
Isla Mujeres lies about eight miles off the eastern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula where the Gulf of Mexico meets the Caribbean Sea. It’s a tiny slice of paradise that’s just five miles long and half a mile wide.
Diving & snorkelling
Isla Mujeres is a year-round diving destination with long coral reefs, excellent visibility and plenty of treasures beneath the waves including manta rays and whale sharks. Machones Reef attracts angelfish and parrotfish and at Tavos Reef, whitetip reef shark love sliding through the arches. Whale sharks visit between late May and mid-September and snorkelling alongside them is a bucket list experience. You can also snorkel straight from the shore at Playa Norte or don mask and fins to explore the MUSA Underwater Sculpture Park.
Beaches
Playa Norte, sitting at the northern tip, is the island’s prettiest and most popular beach. A magazine-worthy gem of powder-white soft sands and calm silky waters, it’s lined with palm trees, beach clubs and restaurants. The sheltered conditions and close-to-shore coral reef also make it a great place for kayaking and snorkelling. Head along the west coast and you'll find a few more beautiful beaches set between private homes and hotels.
Getting around
Renting bicycles or golf carts is the most convenient and fun way to get around Isla Mujeres. To rent a golf cart you need to be at least 18 years old and have a valid driving licence with you. There’s no car hire on the island but taxis are readily available and inexpensive.
