Beyond Melbourne Holidays
Explore historic gold mining towns, bushwalking trails, scenic vineyards and coastal wildernesses.
Victoria’s compact size makes it perfect for effortless touring holidays, whether you’re on a self-drive adventure, motorhome holiday or guided tour. After a few days exploring the state capital Melbourne, it’s worth discovering some of Victoria’s other hidden gems.
To get your bearings, drive to Mornington Peninsula and climb Arthurs Seat for wonderful views across the bay and the distant city skyline. Wildlife enthusiasts should head to Phillip Island where you may encounter koalas and wallabies enroute to Summerland Beach. Here, each evening, hundreds of little penguins leave the ocean and parade up the beach to return to their nests. Wilsons Promontory National Park is great for hikers and also home to kangaroos and emus. To visit Victoria’s main wine-producing, the Yarra Valley, it’s definitely worth booking a tour, particularly if you want to do some tastings.

Where is Victoria?
Victoria is located in southeastern Australia with New South Wales to the north, South Australia to the west and the island of Tasmania to the south across the Bass Strait. The international and domestic airport is at Melbourne and there is an excellent road network across the state making it an ideal self-drive destination.
Phillip Island
Phillip Island has beautiful coastal scenery and is best known for its popular Phillip Island Penguin Parade. Every evening, tens, hundreds or even thousands of little penguins return from a day at sea and waddle up the beach to their sand dune burrows. Visitors can watch from the seating area, where special lighting is used to avoid disturbing the penguins, as they make their way home.
Yarra Valley
One of Australia’s premier wine regions, the Yarra Valley is home to more than 70 wineries around Healesville and the pretty village of Marysville further north; from cellar door tastings at family-owned wineries to showplaces of world-class brands. Enjoy stunning views at the vantage points in the Yarra Ranges National Park. As well as its vineyards, the Yarra Valley is also the location of indulgent spas and galleries, a wildlife sanctuary and bushwalking trails such as the Warburton Trail from Lilydale to Warburton.
Mornington Peninsula
An hour’s drive south of Melbourne lie the rolling hills, orchards, vineyards and beaches of the Mornington Peninsula. Take a cliff-top walk through the National Park and climb to the summit of Arthurs Seat State Park for spectacular views of the bay and Melbourne’s skyline. This boot-shaped peninsula is an excellent starting point for the Great Ocean Road – head to Sorrento where you can take the short ferry ride to Queenscliff to follow the iconic route.
Wilson Promontory
Revel in the natural beauty of one of Victoria’s most loved national parks on this walking tour. Spend a full day following captivating walking trails as you explore this beautiful region and its stunning views of the azure coast. Spot native wildlife such as kangaroo, wombat and emu, and visit the white-sand Squeaky Beach where the quartz squeaks as you walk over it. You’ll also have the chance to have a rainforest walk or head to a peak for panoramic vistas.
