Darwin to Adelaide

Departs Wednesday (March only)

Rolling out of Darwin in style, The Ghan traverses remote landscapes en route to the rural township of Katherine, from where there’s the chance to gain an insight into the natural and cultural wonders of nearby Nitmiluk National Park. Travelling south overnight, the Ghan then arrives into the iconic Outback town of Alice Springs in the morning where an array of included experiences to choose from await. Options range from sightseeing around the town's historic sites, to exploring the spectacular West MacDonnell Ranges. After departing again early afternoon, the train's next stop is at a remote Outback rail siding known as Manguri, here your train crew will prepare a spectacular nightcap under the stars. Next day, your journey ends as you roll into Adelaide at lunchtime.

Adelaide to Darwin

Departs Sunday (March to October) or Wednesday (April to October)

Sit back and relax as the landscape transforms from urban to agricultural to pastoral, marvelling as the mighty Flinders Ranges disappear into the horizon. Rise early for a remarkable Outback sunrise accompanied by hot coffee and bacon rolls during a morning stop at the remote South Australian desert settlement of Marla. The train then glides into historic Alice Springs where a selection of included off train experiences await. Dawn heralds your arrival into Katherine, a town famed as the gateway to the nearby towering sandstone cliffs and Aboriginal culture of Nitmiluk National Park. Returning to the train, your journey continues north before rolling into the Top End city of Darwin as the tropical evening falls.

The Ghan Expedition

Departs Wednesday (April to October)

Only available Darwin to Adelaide, this special itinerary covers the Outback over three nights instead of the usual two nights on the regular The Ghan itinerary. The extra time allowed for this itinerary means that the train spends a full day in Alice Springs which culminates with a memorable barbecue dinner at Alice Springs Telegraph Station. The train then also stops for a full day to explore the unique Outback opal mining town of Coober Pedy. There is also the option to add on at a supplement a scenic flight to Uluru (Ayers Rock) which includes a tour of the rock as well as a nearby Kata Tjuta.
