Australia is rightly famed for its abundant and unique wildlife and we have designed this itinerary around some of the best places to see and experience it. From Ningaloo in Western Australia – the world's largest fringing coral reef and home to spectacular marine species such as whale sharks and humpbacks – to Kangaroo Island in South Australia which is arguably the best wildlife spotting destination in Australia. Recommended itinerary

Days 1-3

Perth

Arrive into this beachside, nature city for a couple of days to orientate your body clock. Explore the botanical gardens and bushland in Kings Park at your leisure, and take the ferry across to Rottnest Island for a day exploring independently. Be sure to visit historic Fremantle on your way back. Stay 3 nights at QT Perth.

Days 4-6

Cape Range National Park

Fly to Learmonth airport, Exmouth and upon arrival transfer to remote Sal Salis Ningaloo Reef. Spend a few days relaxing in this eco glamping paradise where you can spot emus, black-footed wallabies and eagles and snorkel with turtles and rays from the beach. Be sure to take the optional whale shark experience (extra cost). Stay 3 nights at Sal Salis Ningaloo Reef.

Days 7-8

Adelaide

Fly from Learmonth to Adelaide (via Perth or Melbourne) and spend the next couple of days exploring this attractive and laid-back city. Stay 2 nights at The Playford Adelaide.

Days 9-10

Kangaroo Island

Pick up a rental car and drive down the scenic Fleurieu Peninsula before crossing over to Kangaroo Island. Spend the next couple of days exploring this island haven independently. Stay 2 nights at Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge.

Days 11-13

Barossa Valley

Cross back to the mainland and head to the famous Barossa Valley for a relaxed finish among the grape vines of Australia's most famed wine region. Stay 2 nights at Barossa Shiraz Estate.

We've crafted this itinerary in conjunction with the experts at Tourism Western Australia and the South Australian Tourist Commission. We think it's a good one, however it is fully flexible to tailor make it into your own perfect holiday.

Where to stay
We've selected some of our favourite places to stay and that we think help showcase the best of these amazing destinations. However, there's a range of hotels and accommodations to suite most tastes and budgets. Upgrade to The Louise for an extra indulgent Barossa Valley experience, or perhaps to glitzy Crown Towers in Perth. You can also overnight with the quokkas on Rottnest Island at Discover Rottnest.

Unique Experiences
Much of the wildlife mentioned so far is very easily spotted independently whilst on this trip, however we recommend pre-booking the optional whale shark experiences at Sal Salis (additional cost).

How long?
We have planned this itinerary with what we think is a minimum number of nights in each stop. Those with more time could easily spend extra days in Perth, on Rottnest Island and on Kangaroo Island.

Another stop
Australia is a big place so there's a lot to see. If you have the luxury of time, perhaps take a few days to head south of Perth to the beautiful Margaret River region, not only is it home to some of Australia's best coastal scenery, it is also one of the nation's best wine regions. For more adventure, head to South Australia's Flinders Ranges for a true taste of the Outback. You could also easily add in stops in Melbourne and/or Sydney.
