Visit the spellbinding Taj Mahal and Agra Fort

To many people, Agra is the Taj Mahal, the vast yet strangely ethereal mausoleum created by Shah Jahan in memory of his late wife. And were you to do nothing else here but gaze in wonder on this lustrous marble monument to lost love, catching it in the rosy light of dawn or under the light of a blazing sunset or shimmering full moon, it would be time well spent.

But a city that was once the capital of the mighty Mughal Empire and a centre of Islamic learning is no one-trick pony. Dive into the ‘Agra beyond the Taj’ to discover glorious sandstone forts, ornate imperial tombs and serene hidden gardens.

Soak up the atmosphere in the tangle of narrow streets of the Kinari Bazaar, barter for an exquisite marble inlay box made by one of the district’s master artisans and join the locals for a quintessential Agra breakfast of bedai and jalebi at a popular street cart. Or escape westwards to the all-but-abandoned imperial stronghold of Fatehpur Sikri, a haunting vision in red sandstone.
