A friendly lodge in the Makalali Private Game Reserve west of Kruger National Park.

aha Makalali River Lodge is situated on the banks of the Makhutswi River in the Greater Makalali Game Reserve. The Makalali Reserve is home to cheetah, wild dog, giraffe, zebra and the Big Five. Makalali means 'place of rest' and you will certainly be able to do this in the spacious comfort of the thatched suites that have a wildlife viewing deck and plunge pool.

The twice-daily game drives in the Greater Makalali Game Reserve are the perfect opportunity to try and tick off the Big Five and from your room’s private viewing deck you can often spot antelope grazing nearby.

Rooms

Accommodation at River Lodge is spread across three camps. Each camp has six luxury suites, a dining and lounge area, boma and plunge pool. The thatched suites are air-conditioned but also have a fireplace if the evenings are cool. The en suite bathrooms have both an indoor and outdoor shower. River Lodge also has family suites that can accommodate two children on the queen-size sleeper couch.

The chefs at River Lodge showcase Africa’s melting pot of cultures with a range of tasty menus served in the lantern-lit boma. If guests prefer something more intimate, then private lunches and dinners can be arranged on the guest suite’s raised deck overlooking the bushveld.

There are twice-daily game drives led by a ranger and tracker in open Land Rovers. As well as the Big Five, you may encounter wild dog, giraffe and zebra. Plenty of birdlife can be seen from the lodge.

Children under the age of 6 are not permitted on game drives.
