Tsavo is a land of wild, red-soil landscapes that paint its elephants in shades of rust and where maneless lions stalk their prey.
In the 19th century, a pair of these majestic beasts, dubbed the notorious Tsavo man-eaters, plagued construction workers tasked with building a railway to coastal Mombasa. Today, the train line divides Kenya’s largest national park into two distinct sections: the vast open savannah of Tsavo East and the volcanic landscape of Tsavo West. The eastern portion is perhaps easiest to navigate, where sweeping plains speckled with acacia offer unobstructed views of waterbucks and buffalos, giraffes and big cats, not to mention over 500 species of exotic birds.
Head west and you’ll discover open grasslands, woods and swamps, as well as the Shetani lava flow, which spreads like spilled black ink across the landscape. Visitors are drawn to Tsavo West for its sparkling Mzima Springs, a series of underground-fed pools where territorial hippos rule the roost and crocodiles glide silently beneath the surface. An underwater viewing chamber allows you to peer beneath these wildlife-rich pools, which are surrounded by trees where vervet monkeys pick fruit. At the nearby Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, you can see around 80 precious black rhinos, who are guarded around the clock.
Take a safari in Tsavo East or West with an experienced local guide. Our Kenya team are ready to plan your dream trip, complete with safaris and stays at the region’s top lodges.

Take a bush walk with a Maasai naturalist in Tsavo
Join a guided bush walk to get up close to Tsavo’s nature and wildlife with a Maasai naturalist. Along the way you will be given a unique insight into the native flora and fauna and taught about the local culture. The bush walk is completely different from a game drive because you’re on your feet and really immersed in the landscape.
The bush walks take place in the late afternoon and the length is tailored to suit each group’s preference. Guests usually enjoy sundowners afterwards with beautiful views over the plains. During the walk, you’ll stop to learn about the indigenous trees and plants the Maasai people use, often for medicine or to dye their clothes. You'll be helped to identify animal footprints. If it’s rainy season, you’ll also see colourful flowers in bloom.
There’s plenty of wildlife to spot, including crocodiles and hippos by the Sante River. You'll also be accompanied by a security guard. There are often elephants around camp and diverse bird species, including rare water thick-knees.
