Peponi is an unpretentious escape for those in the know.
Peponi is a small boutique hotel started by Danish-born Aaga and Wera Korschen who fell in love with the property in 1966. Today, the third generation of Korschen's run the hotel. Offering barefoot luxury, the hotel is located on a beautiful stretch of beach overlooking the Indian Ocean. There are plenty of watersports to enjoy and the mangrove forests are a haven for birds. Beyond the beach, Shela Village and Lamu Town are definitely worth a visit to explore the mosques, local restaurants and artisan shops. Peponi takes a proactive role in its local environment through the Lamu Marine Conservation Trust.

Rooms
You won’t find telephones or televisions in the 29 rooms which is deliberate – just ocean views, hammock beds (in the Superior Rooms) and a fan to swirl around the sea breeze.
Each room is individually decorated and all have views of the ocean.

Facilities
The restaurant offers an incredible range from Japanese and Italian cuisine to Southeast Asian and Swahili fare with dishes like prawn biryani on the menus which embrace the seasons. Seafood is sourced from their trusted fishermen who use sustainable practices. Sundowners are served around the terrace every evening, where you may be able to watch fishermen fixing their dhows.
Whether you are looking to rebalance your chakras, relax tired muscles with a deep tissue massage or just wanting some well-deserved pampering, the hotel's masseurs await.
Take a stroll along the long stretch of beach - there's 14 kilometres of Indian Ocean frontage. The mangrove forests and sand flats are a bird watcher's paradise, particularly at sunset when birds return to roost. There's a lot of history here, so for those wishing to learn more, visits can be made to the historical sites of Lamu Town and the Takwa Ruins.
Dependent on the tides and currents, there are plenty of watersports here including windsurfing, wakeboarding, water skiing and kite surfing. From October to March you can go snorkelling at Manda Toto.
The Lamu Marine Conservation Trust (LaMCoT) was set up by Carol Korschen in 1992. Its projects include educating the community on the local environment, regular beach clean ups and turtle tagging.
